5 key things to consider before buying a standing desk online

1. Stability

Stability is the most important factor in a sit stand desk. A desk that wobbles front to back or side to side is distracting and uncomfortable. Pay close attention to:

• Net weight of the desk: A stable standing desk should weigh at least 57 kg for a 1200 mm model. Desks listed at 50 kg or less are usually low quality.
• Leg column size: The legs support the entire frame. Look for a minimum leg column size of 80 mm x 50 mm for a solid foundation. Be cautious if the supplier does not specify leg column dimensions.

2. Electronics

A reliable electric standing desk needs a durable electronic system to adjust smoothly to your ideal working height. Poor quality electronics can leave the desk stuck at an unusable level. Look for:

• Testing and certifications: 100 percent ageing test qualified, with automatic fault detection.
• Surge immunity and ESD protection: To protect the motors and control box.
• Electronics warranty: Choose a standing desk with at least a 5 year warranty specifically covering the electronic components, not just the frame and worktop.

3. Weight capacity

A good height adjustable desk should lift your monitors, computer and accessories effortlessly. Weight rating is also a useful indicator of motor life. Many entry to mid range standing desks are rated around 70 kg. For long term durability, choose a model with at least 100 kg lifting capacity.

4. Height adjustment range

Typical electric standing desks offer a range from about 720 mm to 1200 mm. This may not suit users who are significantly shorter or taller than average, or children. If the desk is for shorter users or kids, pay attention to the lowest height. Taller users should focus on the maximum height. A strong adjustment range is 645 mm to 1255 mm.

5. Warranty

Many mid range sit stand desks only include a 1 to 2 year warranty on electronics. For peace of mind, look for 5 to 10 year coverage. Always confirm that the warranty includes the motors, control box and handset.
