5 key things to consider before buying a standing desk online

1. Stability

Stability is the most important factor in a sit stand desk. An unstable standing desk that wobbles front to back or side to side is distracting and uncomfortable. Look for

• Net weight of the desk: A sturdy standing desk should weigh at least 57 kg for a 1200 mm model. Desks listed at 50 kg or less are usually lower quality.
• Leg column size: The legs support the entire desk. Choose a frame with leg columns of at least 80 mm x 50 mm for a solid foundation. Be cautious if suppliers do not state the leg column size.

2. Electronics

A quality electric standing desk relies on a durable electronic system so you can set your ideal height accurately. Poor electronics can leave the desk stuck at an uncomfortable level. Look for these features

• Testing and qualifications: 100 percent aging test qualified and auto fault detection.
• Surge immunity and ESD protection for long-term safety and reliability.
• Electronics warranty: Choose a model with at least a 5 year warranty on the electronics specifically, not just the frame and worktop.

3. Weight capacity

Your desk should easily support your monitors, computer, accessories and paperwork. Weight capacity is also a good indicator of motor life. Many low to mid range models offer around 70 kg capacity. For long-term performance, select a standing desk with a minimum weight capacity of 100 kg.

4. Height adjustment range

Most basic electric height adjustable desks range from about 720 mm to 1200 mm. This suits many users, but can be limiting if you are taller, shorter or setting up a workstation for children. If you are below average height or buying for kids, focus on the lowest height. If you are taller than average, focus on the top end. A more versatile range is around 645 mm to 1255 mm.

5. Warranty

Many mid range standing desks only provide 1 to 2 years warranty on the electronic components. For peace of mind, choose models with 5 to 10 year coverage and confirm that the motors, control box and handset are included in the warranty.
