5 key things to check before buying a standing desk online

1. Stability

Stability is the most important feature of any sit stand desk. A wobbly desk that moves front to back or side to side is distracting and unsafe. Focus on these points:

• Net weight of the desk: A stable 1200 mm standing desk should weigh at least 57 kg. Be cautious of cheap electric desks listed at 50 kg or less.
• Leg column size: The legs are the foundation. Aim for a minimum column size of 80 mm x 50 mm. Lower quality frames often hide leg dimensions, which can indicate poor stability.

2. Electronics

Reliable electronics are essential for smooth, accurate height adjustment. Poor quality components can leave the desk stuck at an uncomfortable height. Look for:

• Testing and certifications: 100 percent aging test qualified and auto fault detection.
• Surge immunity and ESD protection: Protects the control box and motors from electrical damage.
• Warranty on electronics: Choose a model with at least a 5 year warranty specifically covering the electronic components, not just the frame and worktop.

3. Weight capacity

A strong standing desk should easily support monitors, computers and accessories. Weight rating also reflects motor durability. Many entry to mid range sit stand desks are only rated to around 70 kg. For long term performance, choose a model with a minimum 100 kg weight capacity.

4. Height adjustment range

Height range matters, especially if users are taller, shorter, or if the desk will be shared. Standard desks often adjust from roughly 720 mm to 1200 mm. This can be limiting for kids, shorter adults or very tall users. A better working range is around 645 mm to 1255 mm to suit more people comfortably.

5. Warranty

Most mid range electric standing desks only offer a 1 to 2 year warranty on electronic parts. For peace of mind, look for models with 5 to 10 year coverage and confirm that the warranty includes the motors, control box and handset.
